What is Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. In a purified form, it is a very safe, effective treatment not only used in facial aesthetics, but also for a number of medical conditions, including migraine and excessive sweating.
How does it Work?
The toxin blocks the chemical messages from the nerve to the muscle so that the muscle stays in a resting state. The extent of blocking is tailored to suit your individual requirements so you can retain movement and facial expression.
Aim of treatment
The aim of treatment is to significantly relax the muscles causing ‘dynamic lines’ caused by facial movement – mainly the frown lines, crow’s feet and brow lines.
Treatment of ‘gummy smile’ caused by a very active muscle above the upper lip and armpit injections for excess sweating are also possible.
How Long will it Last?
Results tend to last 3-4 months. Repeating treatment when movement recovers will deliver optimum results over time. Should you choose not to maintain the results and not have further treatment, your muscles and skin will return to their pre-treatment state.
Does it Hurt?
A very fine needle is used, most people describe this as not painful and it can be well tolerated with no anaesthetic.
